Home energy and EVs on a rural lot

Building new is the cheapest time to plan for solar, home batteries, and EV charging — conduit, panel space, and wall locations are easy to add before walls close.

  • Talk to your electric co-op first. Interconnection rules for solar and batteries, metering, and any required approvals are set by your utility. Ask before you buy equipment.
  • Panel capacity: ask your electrician to size the service and main panel for EV charging and any future solar or battery.
  • EV charging: a dedicated 240-volt circuit near where you park is common. Use a licensed electrician and follow the charger maker’s installation guide.
  • Permits & HOA: check county and HOA/ACC requirements for roof-mounted or ground-mounted equipment.

Tesla designs and quotes solar-panel systems (with Powerwall batteries) on its website from your address and electric bill. Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms currently list solar panels as the qualifying product for buyer referral benefits, for first-time Tesla customers on Tesla-installed systems. Open the referral link before you start an order — Tesla says it can’t be added afterward.

Planning an EV for a rural lot? See Tesla’s official model pages for current specs and pricing. Per Tesla’s Refer and Earn page, new vehicle purchases are no longer eligible for buyer or referrer referral benefits in the U.S. (as of October 30, 2026), so these are plain links, not referral links.
